Storybook Project

Studies have shown that helping a child maintain a bond with their incarcerated parent contributes to a successful family integration upon release. Volunteers bring children’s books to the prison for mothers to select; the moms are digitally recorded reading books to their children.
Volunteers bring children’s books to the prison for mothers to select; the moms are digitally recorded reading books to their children. The recordings are burned onto a CD, then the books and CDs are sent to the children. This project encourages the mother/child relationship and opens the world of reading to the children.

Storybook Project began in 1999 and continues to strengthen the bond between incarcerated mothers and their children. To date over one thousand children have received this precious gift on behalf of their mothers.

The benefits of this small program are large. At a recent celebration of A Sacred Place, a released woman spoke eloquently of her time in York CI. She spoke with thanksgiving for all programs afforded her through A Sacred Place, including The Storybook Project.

She told us of the depth of love which poured through her words as she read to her daughter, and of the joy her daughter experienced as she listened to her mother’s recording.

What a thrill – holding a book and hearing mom’s voice in the recording!
